A recent study suggests eating 7 servings of fruits and vegetables daily to keep you live longer and healthy. This study was conducted by scientists in the UK and was published in Journal of Epidemiology and community Health as reported on CNN March 31st 2014. Researchers studied the data from more than 65000 people over the age of 35 years spanning  a period of seven years. Researchers analysed the data from daily (24h period) fruits and vegetables consumption with the portion size defined by UK’s department of Health (80g). Results indicated that consumption of fruits and vegetables was related to body mass index(BMI). Body mass index is the mass (weight) of an individual related to height. People who ate more fruits and vegetables have lower BMI and 42% less risk of death. This study reveals another important finding: Vegetables are more important than fruits. Vegetable eaters lowered their risk of death by cancer by 25% and 31% by heart disease. The study suggests that even if you are taking fruits and vegetables increasing their amount is better.

This study supports an earlier study  presented last week at the annual session of American College of Cardiology.Dr Michael Miedema and his

group showed that women who ate 8-9 servings of fruits and veggies in their 20s had  40% less chances of plaque in their arteries in their 40s.

So the slogan: Fill up on salad, snack on raw carrots and eat apples.
